1. How are the Chinese soldiers portrayed in these prints? The Japanese soldiers?
The Chinese soldiers are portrayed as the ones that are critisized by the rest of the people. They are often the ones that are suffering from pain because they are weak. The Japanese soldiers are strong and looks less likely to be defeated by other armies.
1.b Look at the weapons used by each side, are they different? How? Does this tell us anything about Japanese technological advancement?
The weapons that the Japanese soldiers use seem to be westernized and very powerful and would create a lot of damage to the other military. However, the weapons that the Chinese soldiers use looks weaker and has no westernized technology. This tells us that the Japanese considered themselves as the true path of modernization in progress.
2. Why do sports often become symbolic battlegrounds between nations?
Sports become symbolic battlegrounds between nations because its passion and common interest gives the nation a sense of cultural superiority. And the sense that they are both trying to defeat each other become the better and to prove that they are a stronger team. Makes people feel a lot of nationalism. Is this a good thing? Why is it more desirable than, say, war?
2.b Is imperialism/colonialism simply about militarily and politically controlling another nation, or is it also about proving one’s self-perceived cultural superiority over another?
Imperialism is not only about military and politics, but also the proving of one’s nation’s cultural mix. Diversity in between countries and sharing the advantages can help a country grow. Even though imperialism's main impact is on having to grow military, politics, and economy, with the mix of culture, a country can be much more unique with different cultures and beliefs. What do you mean exactly by the mixing of cultures part? Is it better to be multi-cultural than unicultural?
1. Do artistic renditions or photographs depict the heroics of war better?
The photo's or the paintings depict the heroes of the war more clear in a way that they are always shown as the people who are stronger. Such as in the pictures in woodblock prints. The damage shown between Japan and China are way different. Because there is too much contrast between the two countries in the picture, it portrays clearly who is the stronger one and who is the weak one. The Japanes army right away in the picture is shown strong however by making the Chinese army look weaker, the Japanese army looks more hero like and stronger.
2. Do artistic renditions or photographs depict the horrors of war better? (Consider all photographs of war that you have seen, both historical and contemporary)
The photos obviously show the brutness of the war wether if its both in the past and contemporary. In both pictures of the past and present there are dead bodies lying every where, cities collapsing, and people stuck on spears or swords. As the tension in both armies and the one being the hero and the one being weak. The brutality and the cruelness of war. For example reading a document that says ten thousand bodies were dead in the war with the picture of the ten thousand bodies and without the picture are very different. Without the picture it is hard to imagine, however with the picture it is clear.
I think that the medium depends on the perspective of the reader. In the pictures it is obvious that the message is that the Japanese are the heroes and the Chinese are the weak ones. However just because Japan is stronger doesn't mean that they are the heroes. If you look at it a different way it is possible that Japan are the bad guys and the Chinese are standing up against them. So even though that in the pictures it is clearly shown that the Japanese are the stronger ones and the Chinese shown as weaker, it depends on individual perspective. There is no answer to what the message is.
4. Why is 1905 such a turning point in Japanese and World history? How might history have been different had Japan lost the Russo-Japanese War?
1905 was the starting point where Japan became one of the rising powers in all factors, military, politically, and also economically. When Japan beat the Russians, Japan developed a strong navy, this also mean't that Japan had a lot of control in bodies of water. Also because Japan is a island country they had more control of water ways. When the Russians lost against Japan, it meant that Russia was kicked out of the European naval arms race. And this was helpful to many European countries because they didnt have to compete with Russia. Because Japan beat Russia in the war they were able to take control of Korea. If Japan lost the Russo-Japanese War, not only they would have lost control of Korea it would also impact Russia and other European countries. If Russia took over Korea, Korean culture might be totally different in present day. Even though, if Japan lost the war they would have probably seeked revenge and took over the control of power again.
